ABSTRACT

This study sought to investigate the impact of COVID-19-induced flexible work arrangements (FWAs) on gender differences in research outputs during COVID-19. A mixed research methodology was used, focusing on higher learning institutions in Zimbabwe. Purposive sampling was applied to select 250 researchers from the 21 registered universities in Zimbabwe. The study's findings revealed that institutions of higher learning in Zimbabwe did not provide the necessary affordances to enable both male and female academics to work from home effectively. The study also established that FWAs were preferred and appreciated by both male and female academics. However, whilst both male and female academics performed their teaching responsibilities without incident, unlike males, females struggled to find time for research, thus affecting professional growth and development negatively for female academics. Cultural traditions were found to subordinate females to domestic and caregiving responsibilities unrelated to their professions. The findings raise questions on the feasibility of the much-recommended FWAs for future work on female academics' research careers. Thus, without the necessary systems and processes to support female researchers, FWAs can only widen the gender gap in research outputs. This study contributes to the Zimbabwean higher learning institutions' perspective on how FWAs' policies and practices could be re-configured to assist female researchers in enhancing their research outputs as well as their career growth.

ABSTRACT

BackgroundPsoriasis (PsO) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) can greatly impact quality of life and result in substantial personal and societal costs. Complete and up to date data on the prevalence and incidence of these conditions and whether these change over time and vary by age is important for healthcare service planning so that specialist care and funding can be appropriately allocated.ObjectivesTo determine the prevalence and incidence of PsO and PsA in males and females from 2009-2019 across all age groups in England.MethodsWe used Clinical Practice Research Datalink AURUM, a primary care electronic health record database, including 20% of the English population. The codes used to identify patients with PsO and PsA were selected by rheumatologists and dermatologists and cross-checked with published code lists from other studies to ensure inclusion of all relevant codes. All included patients must have data for at least 1 year before their diagnosis. The annual incidence and point prevalence were calculated from 2009-2019 and stratified by age/sex. The study period ended in 2019 to avoid COVID-19 pandemic affecting results.ResultsThe prevalence of PsO and PsA in males and females increased annually, peaking in 2019 (PsO males 2.41% [95% confidence interval (CI) 2.40, 2.42];PsO females 2.60% [95% CI 2.59-2.61];PsA males 0.20% [95% CI 0.20-0.20];PsA females 0.21% [95% CI 0.21- 0.22]), as illustrated in Table 1. In 2019, the prevalence of PsO and PsA was highest in the over 65 years age group;PsO 4.25% [95% CI 4.22-4.28] and PsA 0.38% [95% CI 0.37-0.38]. The annual incidence (per 100,000 person years) of PsO has gradually decreased in males (from 168 (164-171) in 2009 to 148 (145-151) in 2019) but in females it has been stable with a slight annual decrease (from 180 (177-184) in 2009 to 173 (170-176) in 2019). ABSTRACT

This study aims to determine the associated factors and prevalence of Internet addiction among Jubail University College – Male Branch students. Descriptive cross-sectional method was applied. 171 students participated. Self-administered survey questionnaire was the data-gathering instrument. Young's Internet Addiction Test was used to determine the level of internet usage. Factors associated with high internet consumption are accessibility, boredom, isolation, and extreme weather condition. Covid-19 pandemic changed the way respondents consume internet. It also changed the respondents' sleeping pattern and increases the average internet usage per day. Though the internet played a vital role during Covid-19 pandemic, it also increases the dependency of students on it. Higher number of moderate level internet addiction has been found among respondents. Therefore, it is encouraged that JUC should design a program to address the current situation.

ABSTRACT

Globally, gender-based violence (GBV) continues to be a serious global health, human rights, and development issue. There is no standard definition of GBV, but it can be enacted under different forms such as physical violence, sexual violence, economic violence, psychological and emotional aggression (including coercive tactics) directed at someone because of their biological sex or gender identity. Most literature focuses on violence against females (both heterosexual and homosexual) and children, with little focus on males' perspectives. Most GBV narratives present males as perpetrators of violence. Recent statistics show that intimate partner violence (IPV) increased during the COVID-19 pandemic due to increased unemployment, substance abuse and reduced economic status. Recent country specific statistics are sparse but understanding the males' perceptions and experiences of GBV can assist with identifying appropriate interventions to deal with GBV. This critical review highlights critical knowledge gaps in the existing literature and a need for future research within Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). ABSTRACT

BackgroundAccuracy of diagnosis and prompt therapeutic intervention are the mainstay in patients with ANCA-associated vasculitis(AAV) suffering from life-threatening complications [1].However, there is no definition of therapeutic window in vital AAV, nor its impact on patient outcome regarding length of hospital stay, intensive care unit(ICU) admission or survival.ObjectivesThe aim of the study is to analyze the process of care from the perspective of time management in vital organ involvement AAV patients and to identify potential risk factors for ICU admission.MethodsA retrospective multicenter study identified AAV patients with life-threatening organ involvement, defined as alveolar hemorrhage, rapidly progressive renal failure, myocarditis and cerebral granuloma. Demographic data was collected. Key time frames were recorded, namely the interval from acute symptom onset to hospital presentation, days until imaging(plain X-ray, cardiac ultrasound, CT-scan), time to therapeutic intervention with corticosteroids or biologic/non-biologic immunosuppression(cyclophosphamide or rituximab) and to renal replacement therapy(RRT) or plasmapheresis. Time to ICU admission, hospital length-of-stay, Birmingham Vasculitis Activity Score(BVAS) were also noted. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS and Chi-square and Pearson correlation tests were applied.Results66 patients with AAV were enrolled, out of which 17 fulfilled inclusion criteria. Mean age in the study group was 58.6±11.1 years old,10 patients(58.8%) were females and 7 (41.2%) males.11(64.7%) patients were c-ANCA positive, while 6 (35.3%) had p-ANCA and all were diagnosed with AAV prior to life-threatening event. Two patients had COVID-19 triggered AAV.In the study group, the most frequent critical organ suffering was rapidly progressive renal failure(12), followed by alveolar hemorrhages(10), 2 cerebral granulomas and one acute myocarditis. Three patients(17.6%) had more than one vital manifestation. Ten patients(58.8%) had more than three additional non-organ-threatening manifestations. Mean interval from AAV diagnosis to emergency admission was 30.1± 61.1 days, median 3 and from severe episode onset to hospitalization 1.65±0.18 days, median 1. There was only one death in the study group. Three patients were admitted in the ICU in 0.59±1.5 days following hospital presentation and required either RRT or plasma exchange within 2.66 days. Imaging examination was performed unanimously the day upon hospital admission. All patients received corticosteroids in the first 5.95±14.3 days, while immunosuppression was given to 13(76.5%) patients within 11.5±15.5 days from hospitalization.12 patients(70.5%) suffered from associated infections. Mean BVAS(13.6±6.76) correlated to ICU admission(p 0.013, r 0.58).Patients in ICU revealed higher BVAS(22±9.53) versus non-ICU(11.8±4.76).Hospital length of stay was 14.7±10.7 days(median 14) and showed no relationship to the type of severe organ involvement. The need for ICU caring was dominant in males(p 0.05) and confirmed in patients with proteinuria(p 0.012) and at least two major organ damage.ConclusionThis study shows that severity risk factors for potential ICU admission for life-threatening AAV appear to be male gender, proteinuria and the number of affected organs.Moreover, BVAS should be considered a useful tool to predict patients' risk for intensive care management since a higher score indicates a more aggressive disease.However, time to investigational or therapeutic intervention did not correlate to patient outcome in AAV.References[1]Geetha, D., Seo, P. ABSTRACT

Long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis is one of the most common primates in Indonesia. In Sleman, Yogyakarta, Indonesia, the long-tailed macaque is habituated in Merapi Forest. The study aims to estimate the long-tailed macaque population and re-identification of groups. Moreover, we will observe the social structures that probably changed because of the interruption of interaction with visitors after the closure of the Tlogo Muncar area during the COVID-19 pandemic. The estimation population study was done using the concentration method. The long-tailed macaque group in Tlogo Muncar consists of three groups: Waterfalls, Mosque, and Joglo Trubus. The study was also identifying the alpha male of each group. The dataset obtained was processed using Microsoft Excel and analyzed descriptively. The results show that the estimated long-tailed macaque population in Tlogo Muncar area is 282 individuals. Alpha male identification of each group found alpha males in the Waterfall Group characterized by a lump on the left eyelid and a wound on the left hand. The alpha male of the Mosque Group is marked by a lump on his left eyelid with maxillary prognathism, while the alpha male of the Joglo Trubus Group has transverse scratches on the nose. The results showed an increase in the long-tailed macaque population in Tlogo Muncar area from 201 individuals in 2021 to 282 individuals in 2022. The increase of ecological pressure perhaps caused the rise in population number in 2022 during the closure of the area, to which the adult female responded by increasing their reproduction rate. The reopening of Tlogo Muncar after the Covid-19 pandemic has increased feed availability and attracted monkeys to forage outside the forest.

ABSTRACT

At a time when gender equality is a key priority of all international organizations, this paper can be considered a remarkable contribution to the role of women executives in firms' performance. More specifically, this study focuses on the effect of women holding positions of responsibility on firms' performance worldwide. For the purposes of our research, we applied cross-sectional and panel data analysis for all sectors at an international level from 2019, the year preceding the breakout of the pandemic crisis, to 2021, while the indicators used to measure the participation of women in executive positions are classified as ESG indices. The empirical analysis findings end up showing that the participation of women in executive positions positively affects firms' performance over time, while there is no material change observed before and during the COVID-19 pandemic period. More specifically, when the percent of women processing job positions of responsibility increases by 10%, then the index of profitability will increase from 1.4% to 1.8%, regardless of the measurement of female participation in executive positions used. The results of this study constitute a remarkable contribution to the promotion of the creative economy, the progress of societies, and sustainable development. The research's outcome can be primarily used by policymakers drawing up policies for achieving gender equality in the labor market and workplaces and by shareholders and firms' managers in order to trust females in executive positions in favor of their firms' financial performance. The current study is unique in that it focuses on the period before and during the COVID-19 period, as a period of high volatility in economic activity worldwide, while the sample includes firms from large and mid-cap companies belonging to developed and emerging markets. The above approach will contribute to providing more credible information related to the role of women executives in firms' performance.

ABSTRACT

Since the authorization of the Moderna mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, real-world evidence has indicated its effectiveness in preventing COVID-19 cases. However, increased cases of mRNA vaccine-associated myocarditis/pericarditis have been reported, predominantly in young adults and adolescents. The Food and Drug Administration conducted a benefit-risk assessment to inform the review of the Biologics License Application for use of the Moderna vaccine among individuals ages 18 and older. We modeled the benefit-risk per million individuals who receive two complete doses of the vaccine. Benefit endpoints were vaccine-preventable COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, intensive care unit (ICU) admissions, and deaths. The risk endpoints were vaccine-related myocarditis/pericarditis cases, hospitalizations, ICU admissions, and deaths. The analysis was conducted on the age-stratified male population due to data signals and previous work showing males to be the main risk group. We constructed six scenarios to evaluate the impact of uncertainty associated with pandemic dynamics, vaccine effectiveness (VE) against novel variants, and rates of vaccine-associated myocarditis/pericarditis cases on the model results. For our most likely scenario, we assumed the US COVID-19 incidence was for the week of December 25, 2021, with a VE of 30% against cases and 72% against hospitalization with the Omicron-dominant strain. Our source for estimating vaccine-attributable myocarditis/pericarditis rates was FDA's CBER Biologics Effectiveness and Safety (BEST) System databases. Overall, our results supported the conclusion that the benefits of the vaccine outweigh its risks. Remarkably, we predicted vaccinating one million 18-25 year-old males would prevent 82,484 cases, 4,766 hospitalizations, 1,144 ICU admissions, and 51 deaths due to COVID-19, comparing to 128 vaccine-attributable myocarditis/pericarditis cases, 110 hospitalizations, zero ICU admissions, and zero deaths. Uncertainties in the pandemic trajectory, effectiveness of vaccine against novel variants, and vaccine-attributable myocarditis/pericarditis rate are important limitations of our analysis. Also, the model does not evaluate potential long-term adverse effects due to either COVID-19 or vaccine-attributable myocarditis/pericarditis.

ABSTRACT

Studies of myocarditis/pericarditis following mRNA COVID-19 vaccines in Hong Kong have been published. Data are consistent with data from other active surveillance or healthcare databases. The mRNA COVID-19 vaccines have been shown to rarely increase risk of myocarditis, with the highest risk among males aged 12-17 after the second dose. An increased risk of pericarditis has also been shown after the second dose, though less common than myocarditis and more evenly distributed among different sex and age groups. Because of the increased risk of post-vaccine myocarditis, Hong Kong implemented a single dose mRNA COVID-19 vaccine policy on September 15, 2021 for adolescents (age 12-17 years). Post-policy, there were no cases of carditis. 40,167 first dose patients did not receive a second dose. This policy was highly successful in the reduction of carditis, but the trade-off is the potential risk of disease and cost to population-level immunity. This commentary brings forward some important global policy considerations.

Objective: To evaluate the outcome of COVID-positive orthopaedic injury patients operated as emergency cases regarding overall disease progression, laboratory parameters and fracture healing. Study Design: Prospective longitudinal study. Place and Duration of Study: Pak Emirates Military Hospital Rawalpindi and Combined Military Hospital Malir Karachi Pakistan, from Apr to Nov 2020. Methodology: All the orthopaedic injury patients with no other injuries who tested positive for COVID-19 were included in the study. The demographic data, time of injury and surgery, co-morbidities and values of inflammatory markers such as Creactive protein (CRP), Total Leukocyte Count (TLC), Serum Ferritin and Neutrophil percentage were noted pre-op and on the fifth-day post-operation. The bone fracture, its severity, and the type of orthopaedic intervention were also noted. Results: A total of 17 patients were included in the study, out of which 12 were males (70.6%), and 5 were females (29.4%), with a mean age of 49.06±18.78 years. There were 9(52.9%) cases of mild COVID-19, 3(17.6%) cases of moderate and 5(29.2%) cases of severe disease among orthopaedic injury cases. The most common fracture was of the femur in 12(70.6%) patients, followed by tibia/fibula in 3(17.6%) and 2(11.8%) cases of radius and ulna. In addition, there were 2(11.8%) cases of non-union and 5(29.4%) delayed union. Only 2(5.2%) health professionals developed mild COVID. Conclusion: Orthopedic emergency operations of COVID-19-positive patients can be performed safely following strict COVID-19 protocols.

BackgroundCOVID-19 has become a national and an international pre-occupation to all doctors. Dealing with patients with clinical suspicion of COVID-19 is a daily markedly growing professional issue for radiologists. The number of COVID-19 cases we deal with is peaking since last March and so is our experience in recognizing the disease patterns and in assessing its severity. The purpose of this study is to assess the role of CT chest in the diagnosis of COVID-19 based on our experience with 220 Egyptian cases.ResultsA cross-sectional multicenter study involving 220 patients;68 (30.9%) females and 152 (69.1%) males, their age range was 10-92 years (average 49.198 years). Non-contrast MSCT chest was done to patients with clinically suspected COVID-19. Data assessment and analysis for lesions probability, pattern, localization, and severity were done.Bilateral affection was seen in 168/220 cases (76.36%). Multilobar affection was noted in 186/220 cases (84.54%). Lower lobes affection was noted in 179/220 cases (81.36%). Peripheral/subpleural affection was noted in 203/220 cases (92.27%). The common CT patterns (ground-glass opacities, consolidation, crazy paving, vascular thickening, traction bronchiectasis, vacuolar sign, architectural distortion signs, and reversed halo sign) and the uncommon CT patterns (halo sign, masses, nodules, lobar affection, tree in-bud-pattern and cysts) were discussed. Associated extra-pulmonary lesions described. Temporal changes, severity scoring, reporting, and possible pitfalls were all assessed.ConclusionIn our experience, CT plays a basic essential role in diagnosing COVID-19 in the current declared pandemic.

BackgroundHigh-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) has proved to be an important diagnostic tool throughout the COVID-19 pandemic outbreaks. Increasing number of the infected personnel and shortage of real-time transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) as well as its lower sensitivity made the CT a backbone in diagnosis, assessment of severity, and follow-up of the cases.ResultsTwo hundred forty patients were evaluated retrospectively for clinical, laboratory, and radiological expression in COVID-19 infection. One hundred eighty-six non-severe cases with home isolation and outpatient treatment and 54 severe cases needed hospitalization and oxygen support. Significant difference between both groups was encountered regarding the age, male gender, > 38° fever, dyspnea, chest pain, hypertension, ≤ 93 oxygen saturation, intensive care unit (ICU) admission, elevated D-dimer, high serum ferritin and troponin levels, and high CT-severity score (CT-SS) of the severe group. CT-SS showed a negative correlation with O2 saturation and patients' outcome (r − 0.73/p 0.001 and r − 0.56/p 0.001, respectively). Bilateral peripherally distributed ground glass opacities (GGOs) were the commonest imaging feature similar to the literature.ConclusionOlder age, male gender, smoking, hypertension, low O2 saturation, increased CT score, high serum ferritin, and high D-dimer level are the most significant risk factors for severe COVID-19 pneumonia. Follow-up of the recovered severe cases is recommended to depict possible post COVID-19 lung fibrosis.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of hematological parameters to predict severity of COVID-19 patients. Method: This was a cross-sectional comparative study conducted at Central Park Teaching Hospital, Lahore in COVID ward and COVID ICU between April 23, 2021 to June 23, 2021. Patients of all ages and both genders with positive PCR admitted in the COVID ward and ICU during this time span of two months were included in the study. Data was collected retrospectively. Results: This study included 50 patients with male to female ratio of 1.38:1. Though males are more affected by COVID-19 but the difference is not statistically significant. The mean age of the study population was 56.21 and the patients in the severe disease group have higher age. It was observed that in severe/critical group the mean values of total leukocyte count 21.76×103 µI (p-value= 0.002), absolute neutrophil count 71.37% (p-value=0.045), neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR) 12.80 (p-value=0.00) and PT 11.9 seconds (p-value=0.034) and the difference was statistically significant. While in severe/critical group, the mean values of hemoglobin 12.03g/dl (p-value=0.075), lymphocyte count 28.41% (p-value=0.8), platelet count 226×103 µI (p-value=0.67) and APTT 30.7 (p-value=0.081) and the difference was not significantly different between groups. Conclusion: It can be concluded from the study that total leucocyte count, absolute neutrophil count and neutrophil lymphocyte ratio can predict in-hospital mortality and morbidity in COVID-19 patients.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To compare etiological frequencies in patients of acute pancreatitis presenting to our setup with international data. Study Design: Cross-sectional study Place and Duration of Study: Department of Gastroenterology, Pakistan Emirates Military Hospital and Combined Military Hospital, Rawalpindi Pakistan, from Aug 2020 to Jan 2022. Methodology: Patients over 12 years suffering from pancreatitis were recruited using a convenience sampling technique based upon predefined criteria for diagnosis of pancreatitis on a questionnaire. Relevant basic lab tests, including chemistries and imaging, including Ultrasound abdomen and CECT abdomen, were analyzed to establish aetiology. Data were continuously uploaded into an electronic data sheet. International Consensus Diagnostic Criteria (ICDC) algorithms were applied to diagnose autoimmune pancreatitis. Results: Out of 120 patients, 74(61.7%) were males, and 46(38.3%) were females. Biliary pancreatitis was the most common aetiology 50(41.7%), followed in descending order by idiopathic 36(30%), drug-induced pancreatitis (DIP) 9(7.5%), Post ERCP Pancreatitis (PEP) 8(6.7%), tumours 5(4%), Autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP), Hypertriglyceridemia and alcohol-induced pancreatitis each 2(1.7%). Conclusion: Biliary pancreatitis has the highest frequency, followed by idiopathic and drug-induced pancreatitis.

ABSTRACT

BackgroundRadiological examinations of COVID-19 positive patients play a vital role in early diagnosis and assessment of disease course, as most COVID-19 infected patients were diagnosed with pneumonia and characteristic CT imaging patterns. Asymptomatic infected individuals, called "asymptomatic carrier or transmitter”, who are the infectious sources of SARS-CoV-2, and some of them progress rapidly, even resulting in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) with a high case-fatality rate. Our study is a prospective study and aims to be familiar with the CT imaging features of asymptomatic cases with COVID-19 pneumonia.ResultsA total of 44 asymptomatic cases with COVID-19 pneumonia between March 20, 2020 and May 23, 2020 were enrolled. All patients had a history of exposure to SARS-CoV-2 or recent travel history. All patients had no symptoms. The predominant feature of CT findings in this cross-sectional study was ground-glass opacity (GGO) (41, 93%) with peripheral (34, 77.3%) distribution, bilateral location (20, 45.5%) with lower lobe predominance (left lower lobe 72% and right lower lobe 50%).ConclusionCT imaging of asymptomatic cases with COVID-19 pneumonia has highly characteristics findings. Since asymptomatic patients are the asymptomatic transmitter, and some patients can progress rapidly in the short term, it is essential to early diagnose asymptomatic patients with COVID-19. CT scan has great sensitivity in screening and detecting patients with COVID-19 pneumonia.

ABSTRACT

This paper emerged from a talk delivered to the community and members of the Tower Hamlets African and Caribbean Mental Health Organisation (THACMHO) for Black History Month in October 2022. A growing body of evidence exposes the persistence of racism and inequality within health service provision and the psychological professions. This has led to a commitment across all professional bodies to address as a significant matter. This paper explores the links between racism and intergenerational trauma and the consequences on Black men's mental health. The author probes the gaps in services and inequalities using a psychoanalytic lens. Men from Africa and the Caribbean face disproportionate rates of mental health diagnoses and poor care provision. However, little or no consideration is given to intergenerational trauma and cultural factors. At the heart of the paper sits the question: What happens to Black men in the mental health system and why? The author considers whether cultural insensitivity might be a barrier to accessing mental health care and explores the differential treatment options, outcomes, and possible reasons and solutions for the future. ABSTRACT

Background and Aims: Postprandial thermogenesis is thought to be important for the control of metabolism. This process could be reflected by minute changes in body temperature after glucose load. In this study, we measured body temperature before and its change during a glucose challenge and investigated the relationships with anthropometric and glycemic traits. Methods: We prospectively studied 383 volunteers (251 females, 132 males) with a mean age of 46.6 (SD ± 16) years and a BMI of 27.9 kg/m2 (SD ± 5.9). All participants underwent a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and repeated bilateral measurements of intra-auricular temperature at time points 0, 30 and 120 minutes during the OGTT using a tympanic thermometer (Covidien Genius 2). Results: Baseline temperature was 0.17°C lower in males compared to females (p = 0.001) and inversely associated with age (p < 0.0001). During the OGTT, there was a significant increase in body temperature (0.18 ± 0.34°C). This response was present in females and males. BMI was negatively associated with the increase of temperature during the OGTT (p = 0.0147). Participants with higher BMI displayed higher fasting temperatures, but less increase of temperature during the OGTT. Body temperature was not associated with glycemia, insulin sensitivity or insulin secretion, neither in females nor males. Conclusions: There is a robust increase in body temperature during a glucose load that can be captured by intra-auricular temperature measurements. We did not detect any associations of the body temperature with glucose metabolism, arguing against a major contribution of the variability of body temperature in the pathogenesis of diabetes. However, the rise in temperature in response to oral glucose is reduced in obesity and might therefore be involved in body weight regulation.

ABSTRACT

The investigation entitled "Mental Health among college students during COVID-19 pandemic: A study of Gender and Locale Differences" aimed to assess the mental health among college students. The study was conducted on a sample of 500 college students in the age range of 19-21 years studying in various undergraduate programmes offered by different rural and urban colleges of Ludhiana district of Punjab. The sample was equally divided between the two genders (250 males & 250 females) and locale (250 rural & 250 urban). The sample was randomly drawn from the selected colleges that were partially operating during the pandemic. A set questionnaire was distributed to each respondent comprising of Mental Health Battery by Singh and Sengupta (2000) and a General Information Sheet. Later, the scoring was done and the results were tabulated. Results revealed that in the overall mental health scores, the male students performed better than the female students, the rural students performed better than the urban students and rural females performed significantly better than that of urban females.

ABSTRACT

This aim of this research was twofold: First to examine the role of psychological distress in relation to job satisfaction among health care professionals in post COVIDE-19 era. Second to examine the gender difference on the variables of psychological distress and job satisfaction among health care professionals in post COVID-19 era. A sample of 150 health care providers was chosen from various hospitals of Faisalabad and Toba Tek Singh, Pakistan. Psychological distress, and job satisfaction were measured with the use of the Psychological Distress Scale (Kessler et al., 2003) and the Job Satisfaction Scale (Locke, 1976) respectively. The linear regression analysis reveals a significant predictive association between psychological distress and job satisfaction. The independent t-test reveals an insignificant gender difference on the variables of psychological distress and job satisfaction among health care professionals. The study has significant implications for mental health of health care professionals.

ABSTRACT

This mixed-methods study investigates the real and perceived barriers that African American male Edgecombe County high school students face when considering college enrollment to inform potential interventions to improve college enrollment of this market segment. Phase I of the study design included a survey of current, African American, male college students to determine potential barriers African American high school students may face when considering college. Phase II included semi-structured group interviews of African American male Edgecombe County high school students. "Uncertainty" and "frustration" were revealed as the main barriers these students face when considering postsecondary enrollment. Participants indicated uncertainty about college majors, college cost, paying for college, student loans, money, and self-efficacy. Additionally, participants indicated frustration related to course choices in college programs, mathematics classes, as well as their high school GPA not being an accurate indicator of their ability. Phase III included the development of career and technical education (CTE) certificates to create more dual enrollment options for underserved students. Finally, a focus group review of 9-14 pathway samples by African American male students was used to develop a student-informed template for future 9-14 pathways utilized by Edgecombe Community College. Responses from study participants and subsequent meetings with key stakeholders show opportunities to improve the college approach to recruiting students from this demographic. More dual-enrollment certificate options and clearly defined educational pathways (from high school through college) with job market analysis incorporated in those pathways were tools that this study has indicated may help create more postsecondary opportunities for African American male high students in the Edgecombe Community College service area. Additionally, financial aid literacy initiatives for both students and parents and increased recruiting visits to area high schools as the Novel Corona Virus pandemic begins to wane were also indicated as outreach and recruitment strategies. The findings of this study helped develop intentional, dual enrollment certificate options and 9-14 educational pathways the college will utilize to create more postsecondary opportunities for African American males and other underserved groups of students.
